USS Discovery Data Sheet by Kodai-Okuda USS Discovery Data Sheet by Kodai-Okuda
My version of the Starship USS Discovery and the class of ships inspired by the original Crossfield-Class (which I view as being an NX-style ship similar to the Yorktown class battleship).
I used elements of the Yorktown, and some other Star Trek ships and made a Matt Jefferies style of delta-starship.

Backstory:
This class started out as the Pioneer class of deep-space Stellar Explorers just after the Earth-Romulan War of the late 22nd Century.  By the time of the 4-years war with the Klingons, the Pioneer had been retrofit into the Crossfield Class.  Of that class, the USS Discovery was the ship which saw the most action, and encountered bizarre alien technology which allowed a travel method similar to the slipstream drive Voyager would encounter hundreds of years later.  From the alien tech USS Discovery encountered an new drive system was made.  This new drive system--known as a Trans-Dimensional Warp Drive system--used a pair of modified warp engines that when their warp fields were overlapped (by bringing them close to each other) a wormhole could be formed for a short period of time.  Due to the instability of the wormhole, three deflector/sensor arrays were needed to help navigate and maintain the wormhole the ship used to travel at warp speeds in excess of Warp 8.  This drive concept led to the creation of the Transwarp drive system that would come out sometime later.

Hello:
The side view looks magnificent! I almost thought that (in the fleet chart) it would have been the Enterprise ^^; . But I like that the shapw is a direct homage to the eslta design as seen in "Enterprise", so Starfleet didn't forget that design aesthetics just yet and wanted to give it a last take of fresh air and action.

I do like the backstory you gave the ship, how you wanted to keep a unique warp system for the ship as a direct predecessor to the Transwarp experiment. Also, fold-able nacelles! :la: .

Hi Chiletrek,

Thank you.
Told you I had my version of Discovery in the works. :D
You know how much I "love" the look of STD. ;)
Really wish the people at CBS would have just paid Paramount whatever joint-royalty they needed to and made STD look like Star Trek.
It really grinds my gears that they made changes many fans are not happy with.

Yes, I wanted fold-able warp nacelles to tie the Crossfield class line of science vessel with the lineage of the USS Voyager/Intrepid class of starship.  Since the Intrepid class has folding warp engines, I wanted Discovery to have them also and for a similar reason.  The Quantum Slip-stream drive system is not discovered until Voyager encounters an alien race in the Delta-Quadrant in the episode "Hope and Fear".  Because the Quantum Slipstream is similar to the transwarp drive system, I wanted to create a primitive version of the transwarp drive/quantum slipstream drive that would help construct some technological history for the creation of the transwarp drive system when Excelsior is built.

There will be one more Cross-field type (a tri-nacelle version) for deep space Galaxy Exploration.  That won't get done for awhile though.  I am still working on other ships, and I also need (at some point) to get back to the Nexus Arcana ships and mecha. :)

Hello:
 You are welcome! :) .

Oh well, maybe it could add more spice that I'd like to make an Axanar-ified Crossfield class at some point? :D .

Yes, to build a lineage to tie-in known stories and designs are things many people don't consider at all!, like the Delta ship to this Crossfield class to the future Intrepid class.

I thought the tri-nacelle ships were reserved for dreadnoughts, but maybe that third nacelle would be to either keep high-warp speeds for longer times, or to have an spare?

Hi Chiletrek,

An Axanar-style Crossfield class?
CBS' heads would explode. :D
Honestly CBS should just have taken Alec Peters ship designs since they had every right to do so, and used them for STD.
CBS all-access wouldn't be in financial trouble if they had done that.
The Public Relations excuse was that Star Trek Discovery was over and so people cancelled.  The problem with that lie is that people dropped CBS All Access BEFORE STD's season was over.

www.wsj.com/articles/streaming…

It's pretty easy to find out why Star Trek fans rejected STD.
It was not the story (which is not bad), nor the acting (not great....but...this is Star Trek, since when has the acting ever been good. :D ).
The problem is the artistic style chosen for the show and the total rejection of the previous aesthetic.
It was a horrid turn-off and the show has suffered as a result.

I look forward to your versions of these spacecraft.  Your models are excellent and I know they'll be fantastic. :)

Tri-nacelle is actually just an upgrade/retrofit for a design that is being extended to keep it in service according to Admiral Riker in the ST:TNG's final episode "All Good Things".
Just like the quad-nacelles, a tri-nacelle configuration is used to increase speed, and power output for the ship.
Naturally that is desirable on a Dreadnought, but it is also desirable for a ship that is going into the nether reaches of the galaxy (where no man has gone before).
For my USS Discovery Phase-III ship, it will be to truly achieve Transwarp Drive by using a third nacelle (that will later become unnecessary due to the Excelsior style of Warp Engines).  I may even call it a Tri-Grade (word play on Tardigrade) Transwarp Drive system. :D

Hello:
I am a physics teacher, making heads to explode is my specialty :D . I'm kidding :D .

Really? people cancelled the service even before the season was over?  ouchie! . As for aesthetics... it was the same turn-off I've got with many of the added STO ships *doon't kill me people*... but really, I dislike many of STO's ships just as I dislike many of STD's ships. SO I understand why the show suffered (also pew-pew guns).

Thank you very much for the vote of confidence :) .

So there are good arguments for the tri-nacelles? Then that means I should return that into the drawing board for my Starfleet fleet. My custom timeline should have a dreadnought too, because Klingons are fierce no matter the universe... and because Excelsiors shouldn't be mass-produced in that period :) .

Hi Chiletrek,

I agree.
Many of the STO ships are okay for a video game, but not for Star Trek.  The Star Trek Legacy ships are far better.

I cannot wait to see your new designs with triple-warp nacelles. :D

Hello:
I am looking at the video, there are quite nice designs there! :la: .

Well, I am first going to rebuild my Constitution-era ships and then I can expand my basic fleet... and I do have some ideas already :plotting: .

Hi Chiletrek,

I thought you might like those designs.
You can find that game cheap on ebay.

I found one with a Spanish language manual if that interests you, though the game is in English.

Kind of reminds me of what we would have gotten for the Enterprise refit if Philip Kaufman, Chris Bryant and Allan Scott made the movie Star Trek: Planet of the Titans with the Ken Adam and Ralph McQuarrie-designed Enterprise.

If Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope and Close Encounters of the Third Kind didn't come out in 1977, we would have had a very offbeat Star Trek movie for sure.

I agree.  if Paramount (or another company) had given Gene his "Star Trek Phase-II" then this configuration would have certainly been the new Enterprise.
I did use some of Ralph's old artwork as a guide for this design, but my main inspirations were the Yorktown from STL and Madkoifish's Discovery/Delta style starship.

Thank you.
I wanted a ship that looks like it is in between STE (Star Trek Enterprise) and STD (Star Trek Discovery).
So I used the STL (Star Trek Legacy) video game's most advanced ship for the STE-era, (the Yorktown class), as the basis for a Matt Jefferies design.
The other ship I used for my design was Madkoifish's version of Discovery (which is just amazing).

The only thing in STD that really turned me off the show is the look of it.
The story is good, the acting is okay, but the aesthetic is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

I really wish CBS had gone with a modernized version of the Original aesthetic for Star Trek Discovery instead of the radical H.R.-Geiger Klingon looking ships (that look like they just flew out of David Lynch's Dune), and the Battle-Starships of the Federation that look like they were manufactured by the 13-Colonies of Battlestar Galactica.
Someone failed to realize where Matt Jefferies and Gene Roddenberry got their inspiration for Star Trek.
It comes from ONE movie.
Forbidden Planet.
This was the spaceship in that movie.
The United Federation Starship C-57D.

I like your design as well.
Did Madkoifish's design for the Discovery influence you as well.
He definitely influenced my design.

The other ship that inspired my design is the Yorktown from Star Trek Legacy.

I am trying to use ALL Star Trek resources available (with a focus on official stuff, meaning licensed by CBS/Paramount), not just what is considered "canon" as that is too restrictive. :)
